Underlay is what makes a carpet feel expensive and what stops it wearing out from underneath, so it is worth putting under an action backed carpet on stairs and landings especially. See the full carpet range.
One 15m² roll covers a typical bedroom or a staircase and landing. 8mm PU foam is the thickness a fitter would choose for most rooms: enough cushion to make an 11mm twist feel like a deeper carpet, thin enough to stretch a carpet tightly over gripper and round a stair nosing. It roughly doubles the life of a carpet on stairs, cuts noise to the room below and adds a tog of insulation over a cold floor.
Use it under every action-backed carpet and under felt-backed carpet anywhere that gets walked on. The only place it is optional is a felt-backed twist in a quiet spare room.
