Artificial Grass Install Guide
Feeling stuck? Follow this guide for a proffesional artificial grass install
Measure Your Area
Calculate the width and length of the space.
Compact the Ground
Use a vibrating plate or roller to firmly compact the surface, ensuring a stable base. Equipment can be hired affordably, or you can use planks as a budget-friendly alternative.
Compact the Ground Again
Use a vibrating plate or roller to firmly press down the base, ensuring a stable and level foundation. If needed, planks can be used as an alternative.
Join Any Pieces Together (If Required)
Use strong outdoor tape and adhesive to secure the seams, placing the tape shiny side down before applying glue. Press the edges together and weigh them down with heavy objects like stones or plant pots.
Brush the Grass Up and Relax!
The fibers may be flat from being rolled up, so use a stiff brush to lift them and give the turf a natural look. Now, sit back and enjoy your new artificial lawn!
Gather Tools & Materials
Essential items: turf cutter, knife, tape measure, hammer, joining tape, glue, weed membrane, ground pins.
Install Grass Edging (Optional)
If you want to add timber or another type of edging, place it now. Make sure it sits lower than the final grass level so water can drain off properly.
Roll Out Your Underlay and Grass
Lay down the grass underlay first, followed by the artificial grass, making sure not to disturb the weed membrane. Ensure all pieces face the same direction for a seamless look.
Trim the Edges
Once the grass has settled, carefully cut along the edges using a sharp Stanley knife to achieve a clean, precise finish.
Prepare the Ground
Remove the existing turf and soil, ensuring you never build your base layer on topsoil, then compact the ground with a vibrating plate or roller.
Lay Your Sand or Stone Base
Spread a 40mm layer of sharp sand or granite dust evenly across the area. If the sand is too dry, slightly dampen it to help with compaction.
Let the Grass Settle
Allow the artificial turf to rest for at least three hours, or ideally overnight, to prevent wrinkles and ensure a smooth finish.
Pin It Down
Secure the artificial grass using landscaping pins, ensuring it stays firmly in place. If using a timber frame, opt for flat-headed galvanized nails for extra durability.
